House Democrats should be allowed to obtain President Donald Trump's tax returns according to most Americans, a recent poll shows.

The Hill released a survey from Harvard CAPS/Harris that shows a sizable majority, 63 percent, say House Democrats should be allowed to release Trump's tax returns in the next congressional session, while 37 percent disagree.

Several Democrats campaigned on releasing Trump's tax returns, with senior House Ways and Means member Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., telling The Hill in September he would "definitely" call for their release, and ranking House Budget Committee member Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., said there is not "any question about it."

Americans were split largely along party lines, with only 35 percent of Republicans thinking the House should publicize Trump's tax returns, while 86 percent of Democrats say the same. Most independents, 64 percent, said Democrats should be allowed to release Trump's tax returns.

"In a first impression, here the public clearly favors disclosure of the tax returns of their president," Mark Penn, Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll co-director, told The Hill. "This came through loud and clear, so expect Democrats to be requesting them from the IRS."
