Singer Taylor Swift donated $113,000 to a LGBTQ advocacy group in Tennessee this week and wrote a handwritten note explaining her reasons, The Hill reported on Tuesday.
"I’m writing you to say that I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the 'Slate of Hate' in our state legislature," Swift wrote, as posted on Facebook by the Tennessee Equality Project's leader Chris Sanders
"Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and these leaders are doing. I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship," added Swift, who is from Tennessee.
More than 100 religious leaders in Tennessee recently signed a letter denouncing the 12 proposed bills introduced by conservative lawmakers in the state that would limit the rights of the LGBTQ community, according to NBC News.
Swift started taking political positions for the first time ahead of the midterm elections, when she endorsed former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, in his losing battle against then-Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican, in the state’s Senate race.
Following the midterms, Swift said she is "finding [her] voice" in politics and wants to get more involved.
