Jan Crouch, who founded Trinity Broadcasting Network with her husband, Paul, has died after suffering a massive stroke at age 78.
"Laurie and I have just watched the transition of our precious Mother from this world to the next; watched her step into the presence of Jesus and into her heavenly reward. Jan Crouch, known around the world as Momma Jan, has gone home," her son Matt Crouch wrote on the
TBN website.
Paul and Jan Crouch founded TBN in 1973, and it has since become the largest Christian television network in the world with 78 satellites and more than 18,000 television and cable affiliates around the world, according to its
website.
Jan Crouch was known for her pink/purple "cotton candy" hair and her years of hosting programs for children and adults on the network based in Santa Ana, California.
TBN has a Pentecostal flavor, but has been criticized my many evangelicals because of its adherence to the "prosperity gospel."
Christianity Today noted the network was the subject of several lawsuits in recent years.
Many in the Christian community expressed their condolences on Twitter:
Paul Crouch died in November 2014 at the age of 79.
Matt Crouch wrote of his mother, "She has taken a piece of our hearts with her, but it's so wonderful to know that Paul and Jan Crouch are together again, in the arms of Jesus."
