Ted Cruz's father Rafael was once a 1950s Cuban revolutionary who longed to slip into the island's eastern mountains and join Fidel Castro's guerrilla army.
In his new book, "A Time For Truth," the firebrand Texas senator writes that, after his Cuba-born dad was briefly jailed for urban insurgent activities, he asked if he could join Castro at his mountain camp. Ted Cruz says his father couldn't reach Castro, and instead fled to Texas, eventually renouncing Castro after he took power in 1959 and declared himself communist.
The Cruzes have previous admitted that Rafael was an early Castro sympathizer. But the book provides new details about his involvement with Castro's rebels.
The book is being released Tuesday, but The Associated Press purchased an early copy.
