Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif. says the best possible outcome of Robert Mueller’s probe would be if the special counsel clears President Donald Trump of any wrongdoing.
Lieu made his comments during a Wednesday interview on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time.” A video excerpt was posted on the show’s Twitter account.
"The best possible result would be if Robert Mueller found Donald Trump completely innocent because I don't want our president to have engaged in collusion with a foreign power," Lieu said. "I just don’t want that. Now, if the report comes out and exonerates Donald Trump, we move on.”
However, he said Trump’s firing of James Comey as FBI director looks like “textbook obstruction of justice. “
And Lieu, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said if Mueller’s probe doesn’t clear the president, it will be up to Congress to decide what to do.
The Washington Examiner pointed out House Democrats have promised to step up oversight of Trump, including trying to get his tax returns.
And Lieu noted on CNN, the number of other investigations underway involving Trump.
“Regardless of what Robert Mueller's report shows, there are investigations out of the Southern District of New York, there are state attorneys general investigations” he said. “This is going to keep on going to make sure that all the possible crimes that Donald Trump and associates may have engaged in will be investigated.”
In a separate report, CNN said the Justice Department may announce as early as next week that Mueller has submitted his report on the Russia investigation to the attorney general.
