House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is in advanced talks with a group of critics within her party about term-limit deals for party leaders and committee chairs, Politico reports.
About 20 House Democrats who have publicly opposed Pelosi's bid to return to the speaker's chair in the next Congress are involved in the discussions, and Pelosi can only afford to lose 17 Democrats if she wants to reach a majority in the lower chamber.
The move would clear the way for Pelosi, 78, to be elected as speaker next month.
Democrats will either have to keep the current GOP rule of term limits – committee chairman and women could serve only six years before surrendering their gavel – modify it or drop it entirely.
Pelosi has served 16 years as the highest-ranking House Democrat along with Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md.
Some 16 Democrats who opposed her in November declared: "Our majority came on the backs of candidates who said that they would support new leadership because voters in hard-won districts, and across the country, want to see real change in Washington. We promised to change the status quo, and we intend to deliver on that promise."
