Gov. Abbott: Texas Razor Wire Has Reduced Migrant Entries

The razor wire that Texas has put up at a park on the border with Mexico has resulted in a "massive reduction" in migrant crossings in the area, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures."

Abbott, who has had an ongoing feud with the Biden administration over illegal crossings at the border, said that the governors of other states "are rallying around Texas to support our ongoing right to self-defense, and the deployment of this razor wire that has led to a massive reduction in inflow. The area where we have occupied this park in Eagle Pass, Texas, that we put up the razor wire, there used to be 3,000 or 4,000 people crossing that area a day."

Abbot pointed out that, however, "for the past three days, we have averaged just three people crossing that area. The point is: If we put up resistance, we show that we can secure the border. Joe Biden should not be stopping that."

Abbott added, "More than half of the governors are now joined together in support of a very important proposition. And that is: We are guaranteed by the United States Constitution the right of self-defense if states face imminent harm or invasion."

Texas started last year to put up a razor wire along its border with Mexico, but the Biden administration has said the state does not have the authority to take such action, The Hill reported. Texas doubled down on the move, with state officials contending that they have a right to defend their state against migrants illegally crossing the border.

The standoff intensified last month after Texas fenced off a public park in Eagle Pass and installed razor wire without informing local authorities. State law enforcement later prevented Border Patrol officers from going into the park, which also has the area's main boat ramp, according to The Hill.

Although the Supreme Court ruled last month that border agents are allowed to remove the razor wire put up by Texas, which the federal government said prevented authorities from doing their jobs at the border, the Texas National Guard continues to erect it.
