The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a resolution urging China to provide a "full, transparent and independent accounting" of the Tiananmen Square movement, in which hundreds to thousands of people were killed June 4, 1989, as Chinese troops beat down on pro-democracy protestors.
The move comes on the 30th anniversary of the massacre in Beijing.
The resolution states "despite persistent, ongoing, and sometimes brutal repression, there continue to be Chinese citizens bravely seeking to exercise universally recognized human rights, ensure the rule of law, and promote political reform thus carrying on the legacy of the Tiananmen demonstrations."
Introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., the measure also "expresses sympathy and solidarity to the families of those killed, tortured, and imprisoned for their participation in the pro-democracy demonstrations" and calls on the country's government to "support a full, transparent, and independent accounting of the government's actions and number of deaths that occurred during the violent suppression."
China has censored all mention of the bloodshed and suppressed common knowledge of it. There is no census on the actual death toll, and estimates range from several hundred to 10,000.
