The mayor of Tijuana, Mexico is calling on the international community for aid with the migrant caravan, having declared it a “humanitarian crisis,” Newsweek reports.
Mayor Juan Manuel Gastélum said Thursday that the international community, including the United Nations, must help address the “humanitarian crisis” of an influx of migrants from the caravan headed towards the United States.
"Tijuana faces a humanitarian crisis due to a lack of support from the federal government," reads a post on the mayor’s official Facebook page, which said that the city has lost 550,000 pesos each day, equivalent to $26,970, but Gastélum said he will not “compromise the city's public services” to provide support for migrants.
The mayor’s office also said that Tijuana has contacted the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for assistance.
