Chuck Todd Replaces David Gregory as 'Meet the Press' Host

By    |   Thursday, 14 August 2014 05:14 PM EDT

Chuck Todd, NBC News' political director, will replace David Gregory as host of NBC's "Meet the Press," with the change taking place Sept. 7, the network announced.

NBC News president Deborah Turness's announcement Thursday capped months of speculation that Gregory was in trouble.

Gregory confirmed his departure on Twitter.

Todd had jockeyed for the job when Gregory was hired in December 2008 following the death of longtime host Tim Russert.

Turness' announcement said Todd would retain his title as the network's political director, but would be giving up his posts as chief White House correspondent and host of "The Daily Rundown" on MSNBC.

The well-liked Russert kept "Meet the Press" atop the ratings for Sunday morning news shows, but it has fallen into third behind CBS's "Face the Nation" and ABC's "This Week" since Gregory took the helm. Speculation had been ongoing that Gregory would be let go after Deborah Turness took over as NBC News president a year ago.

The network had denied Gregory's job was in jeopardy, but stories leaked that NBC had ordered him to undergo psychological testing. NBC denied those stories.

Gregory, who has been with NBC News since 1995, was seen entering CNN studios last week in what was suspected to be a job interview.
