A pair of transgender athletes faced off in a women's pro pool final over the weekend in the United Kingdom, leading to protests.
Harriet Haynes and Lucy Smith competed in the Ultimate Pool Women's Pro Series Event 2 at Robin Park Leisure Centre in Wigan, defeating four female opponents each to get to the championship match.
The event was held by the World Eightball Pool Federation, which allows trans athletes to compete in the sport without restrictions.
In August 2023, the WEPF and Ultimate Pool Group issued a statement saying "only naturally born women would be eligible" to compete in the women's series, but that ruling was later reversed.
"Providing regulatory conditions are met … transgender and non-binary players will be able to participate in the women's series."
Piers Morgan called the situation "preposterous" and accused the sport of "cheating bulls***."
Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies described the event as "b****y ridiculous and grossly wrong in every way," adding, "said sports hate their female players to do this."
