House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Tuesday that Democrats would not back off from an impeachment probe of President Donald Trump despite his tweet that he will release a transcript of his telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday.
"No," Pelosi said at The Atlantic Festival, sponsored by The Atlantic magazine, in Washington, when asked by Editor-in-Chief Mark Goldberg. "It's not about that. This is about the Constitution of the United States."
President Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon that he had authorized release Wednesday "of the complete, fully declassified and un-redacted transcript of my phone conversation with President Zelensky of Ukraine."
In a second tweet, he said: "You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call.
"No pressure and, unlike Joe Biden and his son, NO quid pro quo!
"This is nothing more than a continuation of the greatest and most destructive witch hunt of all time!" Trump said.
Pelosi's appearance at the Atlantic event comes amid growing calls for a Trump impeachment inquiry — 165 of 235 Democrats now support an inquiry — and reports that she will announce a formal probe later Tuesday.
President Trump acknowledged earlier Tuesday that he had ordered a halt to $400 million in U.S. military aid to Ukraine, saying he was frustrated that Europe was not also contributing to the country's fight with Russia-backed separatists.
He has denied pressuring Zelensky to begin a probe into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, in exchange for the aid in their July 25 call.
But Pelosi said at the Atlantic event that any impeachment probe was "not about politics."
"If the president brings up, wants them to investigate something about his political opponent, that is self-evident that it is not right," the speaker said. "You don't ask foreign governments to help us in our election.
"That's what we're trying to stop with Russia. It's wrong.
"So, it's not only about how to make decisions about our foreign policy and our global futility, it's about undermining the integrity of our elections," she said.
"This is not a good thing for a democracy," Pelosi added, "for the leader of the free world, to be talking like that."
