There isn’t a movement to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy told CBS’ "Face the Nation" Sunday.
“Impeach him for what?” Gowdy replied to CBS’ Margaret Brennan when asked whether Gowdy would sign onto an effort being pushed by House Republicans.
“I—I've had my differences with Rod Rosenstein. I—I talk to him quite often privately,” The Republican congressman said. “Which, again, is a lot more constructive than the public hearings we have. He's a Trump appointee. So is Jeff Sessions. So is Chris Wray. If President Trump is dissatisfied with Rod Rosenstein he can fire him with a tweet. But — but — but to impeach someone. I — no. I would not be — I'm not convinced there is a movement. I read about it in Politico and sometimes their sources are better than mine. But — but I'm not part of that.”
Politico on Friday said House conservatives prepared an impeachment document and that House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows had it in his hands on the floor. The group could file the paperwork as soon as Monday, per the report.
Rosenstein’s removal has been plotted for weeks over his lack of cooperation with their efforts to investigate political bias in the FBI, according to Capitol Hill sources who spoke with Politico. But House GOP leaders like Speaker Paul Ryan aren’t comfortable with going after Rosenstein, with Ryan recently saying the Department of Justice has been showing a good-faith effort to meet the requests of the Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee.
