President Donald Trump says Baltimore residents are personally thanking him for exposing "corruption" in their city.
His comments came to reporters as he left the White House for Jamestown, Virginia on Tuesday.
"I think I'm helping myself because I'm pointing out the tremendous corruption that's taken place in Baltimore and other Democratic-run cities," Trump said. "The White House and myself have received more phone calls than I think on any other subject from the people of Baltimore and other cities corruptly run by Democrats thanking me for getting involved.
"Those people are living in hell in Baltimore — they're largely African-American. They really appreciate what I'm doing and they've let me know it.
"What I've done for African-Americans, I would say no president has done. They are so happy about what I've been able to do in Baltimore and other Democrat corrupt cities … They are so thankful they called me and said finally somebody is telling the truth."
And he added: "I am the least racist person of anyone."
His remarks were detailed in a report by Fox News. They followed a series of blasts by the president against Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., chairman of the House oversight committee.
"Cummings should take his oversight committee and take them down to Baltimore and study the billions and billions of dollars that's been stolen," Trump said. "They ought to take that beautiful waste of an oversight committee and take a look at Baltimore and other Democratic-run cities.
