President Donald Trump's political advisers are urging him hold off on any campaign rallies for now, Politico reports.
Instead, they want him to make the most of White House appearances in dignified settings like the Oval Office and Rose Garden. For the next few months they are hoping he will stick to official events and private fundraisers.
"He loves to campaign, but he also understands that it's very, very early in the season and this is the point in the year when you're doing more planning and budgeting and strategizing than rallying," a person close to Trump told Politico.
The strategy would also mean few presidential tweets blasting the 2020 Democratic candidates, Politico said.
On Tuesday, Trump had jabbed his 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton in a tweet.
"'(Crooked) Hillary Clinton confirms she will not run in 2020, rules out a third bid for White House,'" he wrote. "Aw-shucks, does that mean I won't get to run against her again? She will be sorely missed!"
But some question whether the "Rose Garden strategy" will work.
"Part of the president's problem and why his approval rating has been persistently weak is because the public does not perceive him as being particularly presidential," said Kyle Kondik of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
Trump is expected to embark on a more traditional campaign style by mid-summer, Politico noted.
