President Donald Trump tweeted about a 16-year-old climate change activist after she tore into world leaders for not acting enough to reverse climate change and help future generations.
Sweden's Greta Thunberg spoke at a climate change summit Monday at the United Nations General Assembly and accused world leaders of focusing more on economic issues than those that impact the environment.
"You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal," Thunberg said. "The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you."
Thunberg's remarks included data about carbon dioxide emissions and dire warnings about the future of the Earth as we know it unless action is taken.
After the impassioned speech, Trump tweeted, "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"
According to Politico, which accused Trump of mocking the teen with his tweet, the president attended the summit for 14 minutes before leaving.
Thunberg argued that the Earth is already in a "mass extinction" phase.
"People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing," she said. "We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you."
Thunberg then rattled off reasons why slashing emissions by 50% is not enough, saying other factors will keep contributing to the problem of rising global temperatures.
"A 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us, we who have to live with the consequences," she said.
