President Donald Trump insists the word "racist" has been overused.
His comments came during an interview with C-SPAN that aired Tuesday.
"I think the word has really gone down a long way because everybody is called a racist now," Trump said. "Her own party called Nancy Pelosi a racist two weeks ago. The word is so overused. It's such a disgrace. And I can tell you, I'm the least racist person there is in the world, as far as I'm concerned."
Democrats have strongly criticized Trump over his blasts of four progressive congresswomen and his attack on Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.
"They use it almost when they run out of things to criticize you," Trump said. "They say: 'He's a racist. He's a racist.'
"But with me they have a hard time getting away with it. And they don't get away with it."
The results of a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday found 51% of American voters said Trump is a racist, compared to 45% who said he is not. Eighty percent of black voters said Trump is racist, while 11% said he is not.
Asked about the poll, Trump blamed the news media. He cited the criminal justice legislation he signed last year and claimed it had not been covered enough by the media.
"The press doesn't put what I've accomplished for African-Americans out there," he said.
