President Donald Trump took to Twitter Friday morning while in Argentina for the G20 summit to defend his business practices in Russia during the 2016 election following his former lawyer’s plea deal.
Trump’s former longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, recently admitted to lying to Congress about the president’s business dealings in Russia.
According to Cohen, he was the point person for the Trump Organization in dealing with Russia in negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, a project that continued months into the beginning of Trump’s first term as president.
“Oh, I get it! I am a very good developer, happily living my life, when I see our Country going in the wrong direction (to put it mildly),” Trump tweeted early Friday morning. “Against all odds, I decide to run for President & continue to run my business-very legal & very cool, talked about it on the campaign trail...”
He added, “....Lightly looked at doing a building somewhere in Russia. Put up zero money, zero guarantees and didn’t do the project. Witch Hunt!”
Trump told reporters before leaving Washington for Buenos Aires that “There was a good chance that I wouldn’t have won, in which case I would have gotten back into the business, and why should I lose lots of opportunities?”
“We decided — I decided ultimately — not to do it,” he added. “There would have been nothing wrong if I did do it.”
