Donald Trump filed candidacy papers with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, squashing any rumors that he might not be serious about running for president.
The real estate mogul, who
announced last week he is running for the Republican nomination, said in a statement he is "pleased" to be an official candidate with the FEC.
"I am pleased to submit this filing to the Federal Election Commission, formalizing my campaign for President of the United States," Trump said in a press release. "I can rebuild the American Dream so that it is stronger, bigger and better than ever before. Together we will Make America Great Again!"
Trump's filing with the FEC was confirmed in the press release, which reads, in part: "Today, Donald J. Trump filed his Statement of Candidacy for office of President of the United States with the Federal Election Commission. This filing took place well in advance of the July 1st deadline. Last week, Mr. Trump declared his candidacy at Trump Tower where he spoke about the challenges we are currently facing, his proven record of success, and his belief in the Free Market, a strong military and our country's sacred obligation to take care of our veterans and their families."
Trump formed an exploratory committee
months ago and had been contemplating joining the race during that time. He also pondered entering the 2012 campaign but decided not to.
According to the release, Trump will attend an event in Maryland Tuesday night, followed by visits to Iowa, New Hampshire, and Illinois starting this weekend.
"As we have always said, the Donald J. Trump for President Committee, Inc. will meet all FEC imposed deadlines in accordance with being a candidate for the office of the President of the United States and today we are excited to complete this very important step," said Corey Lewandowski, Trump's campaign manager.
Critics of the Trump campaign have said he is not a serious candidate for president. GOP Strategist
Ana Navarro said last week Trump will "be a distraction" in debates.
"So, I can tell you, I'm leading the 'Dump Trump Movement,'" Navarro said. "If we want entertainment, go watch TV. But what we want is a president, and he just does not have the qualifications."
