President Donald Trump Thursday praised former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn as a war hero and lauded his choice of Sidney Powell, a fierce critic of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, as his new attorney.
"General Michael Flynn, the 33 year war hero who has served with distinction, has not retained a good lawyer, he has retained a GREAT LAWYER, Sidney Powell," Trump tweeted. "Best Wishes and Good Luck to them both!
Earlier this month, Flynn dismissed the legal team that had represented him during the probe and hired his new attorney, according to court filings posted by Robert Kelner and Stephen Anthony of the Covington & Burling law firm. The move came ahead of Flynn's sentencing, which was postponed in December when the court judge criticized a memo filed by his lawyers.
Flynn is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations in December 2016 with then-Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak. Their conversations were about sanctions that had been imposed on Moscow by President Barack Obama's administration and took place before Trump's inauguration.
The retired general cooperated extensively with the Mueller investigation and is cooperating with prosecutors in Virginia in the case of his former business partner, Bijan Rafiekian, who had been indicted on allegations of unregistered lobbying for Turkey. He has pleaded not guilty and his trial is scheduled to begin in July.
