Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., spilled some of the details about his Saturday golf match with President Donald Trump and former professional golfers Gary Player and Annika Sorenstam.
Saying he was paired with Sorenstam, Graham said he made three birdies and shot a 79. Sorenstam, he noted, netted five birdies during the round, and they beat Trump and Player after going up three holes with two to play.
"It was like Christmas but I didn't have to buy a gift. Can you imagine playing golf with the president of the United States, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam? It's only in America can you grow up in the back of a liquor store like I did and get to do all this," Graham said.
"It was a wonderful experience. Gary Player's 84, he shot in the mid-70s. He most likely could have done better if he could putt it a little bit better. He's the world's ambassador for golf, what a gentleman.
"Annika was my partner because I always go with young," Graham continued. "She is an amazing person, hits the golf ball as pure as anybody I've ever seen. … We slayed the black knight and POTUS, down 3-2. The president made it such a fun experience. He's a gracious person."
The "black knight" was a reference to Player, who wears all-black outfits when he plays.
When asked if Trump would agree that Graham and Sorenstam were victorious, Graham said there are plenty of people to back up the story.
"I've got 1,000 witnesses," he said. "The president made it so much fun for us all. Gary Player is just a marvel to watch. He's got a beautiful golf swing and stories about 40-plus years being a pro golfer. Annika is a legend in women's golf. You thought it would be fun, it was."
The group played at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia.
