Police in Phoenix used pepper balls and pepper spray after authorities said protesters tossed rocks and bottles at officers following President Donald Trump's speech at the Convention Center in the city's downtown.
Police also said that protesters dispersed gas in the area, according to AZCentral.com. News reporters in the area said they heard two loud flash bangs in the area.
No information on injuries or arrests was immediately available.
The pepper spray was released at 8:38 p.m. local time, within 15 minutes after Trump's speech ended, AZCentral.com reports.
Before the rally, thousands of protesters lined the streets outside the convention center, leading police to cordon them off across the street as supporters entered into the venue.
Demonstrators shouted that those entering the venue were taking a "walk of shame," according to local news reports, while some of the president's supporters smiled and waved back.
