President Donald Trump's administration is considering a tax credit for working class families who want to send their children to private school, Politico reports.

Trump, during a recent meeting with parents and teachers at the White House, said he wanted to make sure "every single disadvantaged child in America, no matter what their background or where they live, to have a choice about where they go to school."

Religious schools would also fall under the new policy.

Trump campaigned on a school choice platform and said he wanted to let parents decide which programs were best for their kids. He said schools should compete for students and that charter and magnet schools, along with the voucher program, needed to be expanded. He followed through with that concept when he chose Betsy DeVos as his Education Secretary.

Public school advocates don't like the idea of a federal tax credit.

"The end result is the same — federal tax dollars going to private schools," Sasha Pudelski, assistant director for policy and advocacy at The School Superintendents Association, told Politico.

"It's just done through a more complex and less direct mechanism," she said.

Sources told Politico the program might be capped at $20 billion and could look a lot like the Educational Opportunities Act introduced by Sens. Marco Rubio and Rep. Todd Rokita in 2013 – a bill that would have created a tax credit for $4,500 for individuals and up to $100,000 for corporations.
