Fox News commentator Brit Hume on Monday warned that President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria “is a big deal,” and added that Trump risks losing conservatives.
Last week, Trump announced that he would pull U.S. troops out of Syria, a move that caused Secretary of Defense James Mattis to resign.
“Too much of the criticism of Trump has been overblown, too often about things that either didn’t happen or didn’t matter,” Hume tweeted Monday morning. “That is not true of Syria/Mattis. This is a big deal, both in the substance of the Trump decisions and the way the whole episode was handled.”
He later retweeted Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen, who had responded to Hume’s tweet with, “Agree 100 percent. When everything is an outrage nothing is an outrage. And this irresponsible Syria/Afghan withdrawal IS an outrage.”
Hume later wrote about an op-ed in the Washington Examiner from Salena Zito, titled, “Trump forgets his base is populists and conservatives." Hume called it a “smart piece,” adding, “And he’s in the process of blowing up the conservative part of it. I wonder if he understands.”
