The Wall Street Journal is calling for President Donald Trump to release the transcript of his call with the Ukrainian president.

"Democrats are having another impeachment moment, and this time they think they have the goods with Donald Trump's phone-call request that Ukraine's president investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter for their Ukraine interventions," the newspaper said in an editorial posted Monday night.

"The best defense for Mr. Trump here is a good offense, specifically releasing the transcript of his call."

And the Journal added: "Mr. Trump says he may release the transcript of the entire call to the public, and consider the case. That's better than sending the transcript to Congress, which will leak it anyway and perhaps piecemeal."

The newspaper noted, however, the president is "breaking no law in refusing to turn it over."

"But if he keeps it under wraps, Democrats will claim Mr. Trump is hiding something," the Journal said. "By releasing the transcript to the public himself, he counters that charge and gives Democrats a little more to investigate. He also would be daring Democrats to impeach him based on a phone conversation whose content Americans will be able to evaluate for themselves."

The Journal said a look at the transcript will allow the public to see "if Democrats have the courage of their impeachment dreams."
