President Donald Trump blasted Democratic lawmakers again as he continued his push for funding to build a wall on the southern border.
Trump made his remarks in a Thursday morning tweet as the partial government shutdown continued because of the funding impasse.
The president also insisted most of the government workers not being paid as a result of the shutdown are Democrats, suggesting Democrats are only hurting their own constituents. That is a change from his characterization of them only days ago as supporters of his wall and the partial government shutdown.
He wrote:
"Have the Democrats finally realized that we desperately need Border Security and a Wall on the Southern Border. Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking, Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country. Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?
Trump provided no evidence to support his claim, but he has been trying to blame Democrats for the partial government shutdown — now in its sixth day — that hinges on his demand for $5 billion to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border. He told reporters Tuesday in the Oval Office that furloughed federal workers are sympathetic to the shutdown because they support the wall.
"Many of those workers have said to me, communicated, 'stay out until you get the funding for the wall.' These federal workers want the wall," Trump said at the time.
Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, called Trump's tweet "outrageous," adding on Twitter on Thursday that "federal employees don't go to work wearing red or blue jerseys."
Trump expanded his view of blame in another Twitter post eight hours later that accused the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals for its DACA decision:
The reason the DACA for Wall deal didn't get done was that a ridiculous court decision from the 9th Circuit allowed DACA to remain, thereby setting up a Supteme Court case. After ruling, Dems dropped deal – and that's where we are today, Democrat obstruction of the needed Wall.
