Turkey on Monday said it was recalling its ambassadors to the U.S. and Israel to protest the U.S. relocating its embassy to Jerusalem, CNN reports.

The move came after deadly protests took place in Gaza ahead of and during the ceremony in Jerusalem. At least 55 Palestinians were killed, and 2,700 injured, in clashes along the Gaza-Israeli border, making it the deadliest day there since the 2014 Gaza war.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ confirmed to Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency the envoys were being called back, and the report was confirmed by the Turkish embassy in Washington.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the same report called Israel a "terrorist state" and said the massacre was a "genocide" inflicted upon the Palestinians.

Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner attended the ceremony in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood, and watched as U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin unveiled the U.S. seal at the new site.

President Donald Trump in a video message broadcast at the event congratulated Israel, saying the opening had been "a long time coming."

"Today, Jerusalem is the seat of Israel's government," Trump said in the pre-recorded remarks. "It is the home of the Israeli legislature and the Israeli supreme court and Israel's prime minister and president. Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital, yet for many years, we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel's capital is Jerusalem.

"As I said in December, our greatest hope is for peace." he added.
