Reaction was mixed Tuesday night to special counsel Robert Mueller's sentencing memo on former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn that sought no jail time for his "substantial" cooperation in the Russia probe.
Former Barack Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod trolled the "breathless media" for getting "faked out" by Mueller, whom Axelrod praised for "defying hype and revealing as little of substance as possible" in the sentencing memo.
Ex-CIA operations officer and Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin said he was "encouraged by confirmation" of Flynn's cooperation with Mueller.
"Especially for an ex-intel officer, aiding a foreign adversary and a compromised politician is despicable, but there should be place among us for those who, in the, choose the right."
Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., a former prosecutor, tweeted one outcome of the sentencing memo was "Mueller believes his job is secure & felt no need to disclose what he uncovered."
But retired Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters was unforgiving in remarks to CNN.
"He betrayed his country," Peters said. "But as someone who has known Mike since 1985, he has served his country well. He was a superb officer . . . [H]e may be pardonable, but its unforgivable."
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., tweeted the "obvious irony" of the recommendation for no jail time for Flynn, whom he noted led chants of "lock her up" — referring to Hillary Clinton — during the Trump campaign.
But he also said the sentencing memo reflects "both the timeliness and significance of his help."
