Man Fatally Shoots Himself on West Front of US Capitol

Saturday, 11 April 2015 02:51 PM EDT

A man shot himself to death on the west front of the Capitol in Washington and the building has been locked down as a precaution, police tell ABC News.

U.S. Capitol Police Spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said the man was wearing a blue backpack and had a sign taped to his hand.

"There are no indications at this point of terrorism," a federal official told NBC News.

Police were also investigating a suitcase nearby.

No one is being allowed to enter or exit the Capitol and the visitors center.

Congress has been on spring break for two weeks and lawmakers are set to return to work Monday.
