Iran is expected to indict a California man for allegedly attacking the country's human rights record on social media, according to news reports.
The man, Gholamrez Shahini, 46, who graduated from San Diego State University in May, was detained by Tehran authorities last month while visiting his parents in Iran, the Los Angeles Times reports.
He was arrested on July 11 while staying at his mother’s house in Gorgan, a city about 250 miles northeast of Tehran and near the Caspian Sea, according to the report.
Shahini's detention was confirmed several days later by Iranian Judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei to the country’s semi-official Fars News, according to Foreign Desk News.com.
He is expected to be indicted by an Iran Revolutionary Court and charged with blasphemy for purportedly posting the comments on Facebook.
The indictment would represent the first known charges against an American citizen since four U.S. hostages were released by Tehran in January, the Foreign Desk News.com reports.
