Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, will be deported after he was found not guilty in the killing of Kate Steinle, according to CNN.
Garcia Zarate was acquitted of charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter, and assault with a deadly weapon. He was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, CNN reported.
The undocumented man has not been sentenced — he faces up to three years in prison, but already has spent more than two years while awaiting trial, the report said.
He had been deported five times, and at the time of Steinle's killing in July 2015, he was wanted for a sixth deportation on drug felonies, CNN reported.
Prosecutors said Garcia Zarate deliberately fired into a crowd on the pier in 2015, killing Steinle as she walked with her father. The defense attorney said the shooting was an accident, with the bullet ricocheting off the ground and hitting Steinle.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deputy Director Thomas D. Homan said ICE "will work to take custody of Mr. Garcia Zarate and ultimately remove him from this country," according to NPR.
President Donald Trump on Friday called the verdict "disgraceful."
