Friday, 16 January 2015 05:34 PM EST

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings on President Barack Obama's nominee for attorney general on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29.

Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa announced the hearing dates on Friday. The president has nominated Loretta Lynch to succeed Attorney General Eric Holder.

The 55-year-old Lynch is a Brooklyn federal prosecutor. Lynch would be the first African-American woman to serve as attorney general if she is confirmed by the Senate.

Grassley said the first day will be dedicated to opening statements and questioning of the nominee. The second day will consist of testimony from outside witnesses.
