Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested G-7 leaders provide sophisticated anti-missile systems to his nation to help in the war with Russia.

Politico reported the plea by Zelenskyy came Monday during a video appearance by the Ukrainian president at the G-7 leaders' summit in Germany.

His comments appeared in a summary of remarks issued by Zelenskyy's office and confirmed by Western officials who heard them, the news outlet said.

During his appearance, Zelenskyy also asked for greater financial support for his nation and for additional sanctions against Russia.

"Our state needs modern and effective missile defense systems that can provide peace to Ukrainian cities far from the front," Zelenskyy said, according to the summary provided by his office. "Russia is intensifying rocket attacks on Ukraine, so it is very important to guarantee basic security to the civilian population."

The United States has said it will provide a medium-to-long-range surface-to-air missile defense system to Ukraine as the country's war with Russia rages on, CNN reported.

The missile defense system, known as a NASAMS system, "provides air defenders with a tailorable, state-of-the-art defense system that can maximize their ability to identify, engage, and destroy current and evolving enemy aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and emerging cruise missile threats," according to producer Raytheon.

At least 15 people were killed and scores injured when a Russian missile hit a shopping mall in central Ukraine on Monday, The Washington Post reported.

The Pentagon announced on Monday that Russia had launched about 60 missile strikes throughout Ukraine over the weekend, the newspaper noted.
