Mark Hamill, the actor known for playing Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise, has been enlisted to serve as ambassador for a Ukrainian government fundraising project.
According to the president of Ukraine's official website, Hamill will support the "Army of Drones" project in his new role.
The project involves the regular procurement, repair, and replacement of drones, as well as pilot training.
Contributions to the project have allowed The Armed Forces of Ukraine to purchase 986 drones to date, according to the website.
"The light will win over darkness," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the American actor in a video call. "I believe in this, our people believe in this.
"Thank you for taking on this difficult mission of being the first ambassador to help Ukraine raise funds for the Army of Drones to support our defenders. It is really important!"
Hamill said he was "honored" Zelenskyy asked him to serve as the "Army of Drones" ambassador.
"In this long and unequal fight, Ukraine needs continuous additional support," Hamill said. "I know for certain that Ukrainians need drones to protect their land, their freedom, and the values of the entire democratic world. Right now is the best time for everyone to come together and help Ukraine stand up in this war with the evil empire."
The "Army of Drones" project is a combined effort of the "General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the State Special Communications Service and UNITED24," according to the Ukrainian president's website.
A fundraising platform initiated by Zelenskyy, UNITED24 is the main venue for charitable donations in support of Ukraine. The platform collected more than $180 million from citizens of 110 countries worldwide in its first four months of operation.
Ambassadors for UNITED24 include professional athletes, the band Imagine Dragons, American actor Liev Schreiber, and singer and actor Barbra Streisand.
