Rep. Brad Wenstrup, while arguing that a wall is best for American security, Wednesday sparred with CNN "New Day" host Alisyn Camerota after she questioned many of the statements he was making.
"This is not a partisan issue," the Ohio Republican argued during an interview with CNN's "New Day."
"I'm trying to find what's actually going to work best to keep Americans safe and secure, and I don't just mean from terrorism, I mean so that we have a robust legal immigration system and we can stop the flow of any diseases coming into our country, we can stop the flow of drugs coming into our country."
"Diseases are not pouring into the country," Camerota interjected. "That's not what this border wall situation is about."
She also argued that the DEA has determined that most of the heroin and other drugs coming into the country arrive through legal ports of entry.
"I would invite people to come to my district, Ground Zero for the heroin problem in our country, and talk to the addicts," said Wenstrup.
"Talk to the providers. Talk to law enforcement, and talk to the families that have lost someone. This is a humanitarian crisis not only at the border, but in our districts as well."
The president's proposal does not just include more miles of wall, Wenstrup said, but using technology and more to detect drugs.
Further, President Donald Trump has changed his mind on the scope of the wall, and that shows he's willing to negotiate, said Wenstrup.
