The Washington Post obtained a filing of a whistleblower complaint, which stated that the e-commerce giant Amazon stopped short of buying companies outright but took steps to invest in them heavily in order to skirt antitrust laws.
The whistleblower argued to regulators Amazon "illegally," per The Post, disguised what was essentially an acquisition that would have been blocked by oversight authorities.
The complaint focused on Amazon's hiring of three founders and a quarter of the staff from Covariant AI, a company that makes artificial intelligence software for warehouse robots. Amazon stated it purchased a nonexclusive license for the program but left the company to pursue other deals.
"I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a world where AI is used to calcify all of the most monopolistic elements in society," the whistleblower, a Covariant shareholder and former employee, said.
