A White House aide sent an email to House Republicans on Monday critical of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The email claimed it was being sent at the direction of President Donald Trump, according to NBC News.
The network news said the email was sent by Molly Michael, special assistant to the president and Oval Office operations coordinator.
Attached to the email was a graphic showing McConnell’s polling numbers since May against his 2020 Democrat challenger Amy McGrath. NBC News said the graphic suggested McConnell was reelected only because of Trump.
It said: "Sadly, Mitch forgot. He was the first one off the ship!"
The email reportedly also suggested Trump is good for the GOP. The email came as congressional Republicans are being pushed to challenge the election results.
According to NBC News, the email was sent after Trump met with House Republicans on Monday to discuss “fighting back” in support of claims of voter fraud.
The White House and McConnell did not respond to requests for comment.
Last week, McConnell had congratulated Democrat Joe Biden, calling him the president-elect and saying the Electoral College “has spoken.” Trump responded by tweeting to McConnell that it was “too soon to give up” on the election.
