Whitefish Energy is halting power grid repairs in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico over an $83 million payment dispute with the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, CNN reported Monday.
Whitefish CEO Andy Techmanski said its repeated requests for payment were not fulfilled.
"We stopped because of the financial situation, lack of payment with PREPA has gotten beyond its maximum threshold and what we can sustain as a business," Techmankski said.
Whitefish's original $300 million contract to help rebuild the electrical system was set to be voided after Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello in late October urged the utility to scrap the deal. The tiny 2-year-old company came under scrutiny for its connections to the Trump administration, and the deal was being audited at the local and federal level.
Whitefish told CNN its work on the island has involved more than 500 contractors and subcontractors.
"It may have not been the best business decision coming to work for a bankrupt island," Techmanski said. "We were assured PREPA was getting support from FEMA and there was money available to pay us for 100 percent of our work."
PREPA in a statement said it would not give more information "until the investigation process ends. The reason is to prevent the process from being affected."
