Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, the House's sole black Republican, will not seek re-election in 2020, a massive setback to Republicans who want to win back the House, reports The Washington Post.

The three-term congressman and former CIA agent said he made the decision "in order to pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security."

"I think I can help the country in a different way," said Hurd, 41. "And I think I have an opportunity to help make sure the Republican Party looks like America."

In his interview with the Post, Hurd criticized President Donald Trump for his comments aimed at four Democratic congresswomen of color, but said he would still vote for him in 2020 if he nabs the Republican ticket.

"When you imply that because someone doesn't look like you, in telling them to go back to Africa or wherever, you're implying that they're not an American and you're implying that they have less worth than you," Hurd said.

Hurd, who represents the only true swing district in Texas, joins Reps. Pete Olson, R-Texas, and K. Michael Conaway, R-Texas in announcing his retirement this cycle.
