A group of 250 experts have signed a petition expressing their “serious concern” to the United Nations and the World Health Organization about the risks posed by wireless headphones, Yahoo! Finance reports.
Led by the International Electromagnetic Field Alliance, or IEMFA, the scientists warn that “numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF [electromagnetic frequency radio waves] affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines.”
“Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans,” the group adds.
However, University of Pennsylvania bioengineering professor Kenneth Foster told health and lifestyle writer Markham Heid that studies showing a connection between mobile devices and cancer “have no credibility,” and that public health organizations that have studied research and information on Bluetooth and other wireless technology have not found “any clear evidence for health hazards at exposure levels below international limits.”
