Youngkin Video Sparks 2024 Speculation

By    |   Friday, 19 May 2023 12:46 PM EDT

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin tweeted a campaign-style video, despite his earlier comments that he is not running for the Republican presidential nomination 2024.

"It's time to usher in a new era of American values. It's our turn to choose life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," he tweeted.

The remarks in the video, which was attached to the tweet, came from Youngkin's recent address at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

"It's pretty overwhelming to contemplate the future of America," he said. "It's such an honor to be here with proud Americans who carry on President Reagan's cherished legacy. He brought peace by projecting strength," Youngkin said. "At a time when it's easy for us to lose faith, to worry that we are indeed that one generation when freedom becomes extinct, there are lights shining.

"We can usher in a new era of American values. President Ronald Reagan changed lives, and now it's our turn. A time to choose life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness over oppression and dictatorial rule. That stakes are high and the consequences couldn't be greater."

The Hill, which said the video was paid for by his Spirit of Virginia PAC, said the spot has sparked renewed speculation about Youngkin's presidential ambitions.

Youngkin said earlier this month that he is not running for president in 2024. His comments came while speaking to the Wall Street Journal's Gerard Baker at the Milken Institute in Los Angeles on May 1.

Asked if he would run, Youngkin said: "I'm going to be working in Virginia this year. ... Our [state] House and Senate are up for full reelection. I have a House that's controlled by Republicans and a Senate that's controlled by Democrats. I want to hold our House and flip our Senate."

Youngkin has been mentioned as a potential Republican presidential contender since winning Virginia's 2021 gubernatorial election, according to The Hill.
