Ex-DOJ Lawyer: Nobody Will Be Charged in IRS Scandal

Thursday, 26 June 2014 07:18 PM EDT

The culprits behind the IRS tea party-targeting scandal will never be charged with a crime, former Department of Justice lawyer J. Christian Adams says.

"Get over it folks. Nobody is going to be held responsible for it," Adams told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"It's simply a symptom of an out-of-control government that is abusing power."

A House select committee is currently probing allegations that IRS officials targeted tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax exempt status.

Former IRS official Lois Lerner, believed to have been part of the targeting, has pleaded the Fifth Amendment in her refusal to testify.

Adams, now counsel for the Election Law Center, said the IRS is rife with "dishonesty" and "abuse of power."

"There's ideological targeting, there's dishonesty to Congress, there's lies, there's White House spin," he said.

"Look at the pattern. Remember back to day one of this scandal when President [Barack] Obama got out there and said he's going to get to the bottom of this? And that was it. It was a one-day deal."
