Alabama AG to Newsmax: Trans Care for Kids a 'Failed Experiment in Europe'

By    |   Tuesday, 16 January 2024 12:45 PM EST

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall told Newsmax on Tuesday that his state's ban on transgender care for minors is "clearly a victory for Alabama," which is following the lead of Europe, where such care for children has been deemed a "failed experiment."

"As you acknowledged, we've had multiple states that have weighed in to say that we're not going to experiment on America's kids," Marshall said during an appearance on "National Report." "We're not going to allow them to become the victims of abuse. And when we see courts — like the 11th Circuit did last week for us — recognize Alabama and the state's interest in protecting its kids, that's a victory and we're really pleased with the progress of those cases."

Last week, a federal appeals court ruled that Alabama can start to enforce a ban on transgender care for people younger than 19, granting the state's request to pause a preliminary injunction that had blocked enforcement of the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act.

Responding to criticism of the new law in Alabama, Marshall said that "the left is perpetuating a myth" in pushing transgender care for kids.

"What we've seen is that this is a failed experiment in Europe," he said. "They have pulled back from advocating this type of care, but in fact have seen the hazards to kids and the impact on kids as a result of doing so. We're talking about science. We've looked at the research and understand what we need to do to help kids that are suffering from gender dysphoria and it's not off-label use of medication."

"It's clearly not radical surgeries on children, but instead, there is appropriate care that can be done that can be take place in Alabama and the other states have adopted the similar laws," he continued. "But we don't need to be experimenting on kids. And despite what [Assistant Secretary for Health] Admiral [Rachel] Levine and others may advocate, this is not about the best interests of kids. This is a radical gender ideology of this administration manifesting itself in the way that we take care of America's children."

In July, Levine, the highest-ranking openly transgender federal official, insisted that children and teenagers can't and shouldn't have to wait until adulthood to undergo gender transition therapy.

The lawsuit challenging the Alabama ban is set to go to trial in August and the issue may ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court.
