The number of people seeking treatment and dying from coronavirus is at a low point since April, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told Newsmax TV's "Spicer & Co."
"We now are seeing deaths at the lowest level in about two months ... we've been about two weeks with fewer than 1,000 deaths each day ... hospitalizations at the lowest level in two months," Azar said.
He said cases have been increasing around the country. In response, researchers have pinpointed and headed out to those locations to investigate the cause.
"And while we're seeing cases increase, those case increases are happening in about 110 counties around the country, and they can be for any number of reasons and we're deploying teams out there to get to the bottom of them," Azar said.
Adding to the good news, Azar said the average age of people contracting the virus has fallen, which is a positive development.
"We just had a call with the nation's governors and what we're hearing from them is that the average age of individuals testing positive is decreasing in many instances, and that's a really good sign. That means reaching a lot of people with additional testing and we may be actually pulling in asymptomatic cases."
