Former Sen. D'Amato to Newsmax: Charges Against Giuliani 'Nonsense'

By    |   Thursday, 24 August 2023 04:37 PM EDT

Former Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y., told Newsmax on Thursday that charges against former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in Georgia are "nonsense" and a threat to democracy in the U.S.

Guiliani, a former attorney for former President Donald Trump, surrendered to authorities in Georgia on Wednesday after an indictment that alleges he conspired to help Trump subvert the state's 2020 presidential election results. Guiliani was booked at the Fulton County jail and released on $150,000 bond.

"The bedrock of American law is the attorney-client privilege," D'Amato told "American Agenda." "If every attorney who aggressively represents his client can be indicted, then any good attorney can be indicted.

"These political indictments are bringing the us awfully close to places like Russia and Pakistan, where political opposition leaders have been arrested and jailed on these phony charges."

D'Amato said he can't imagine an attorney is being indicted because his client believed an election was stolen.

"This is nonsense," D'Amato said. "Rudy Giuliani and I are not particularly close. He was a great mayor and was a great U.S. attorney. We have our differences. But I'll tell you, this is wrong, and it threatens America's democracy.

"This is not law enforcement. This is terrorizing the opposition, and that's what's going on. You arrest or charge a lawyer because he is representing someone who believes the election was stolen? No. The election may or may not have been stolen but you don't go after and then indict the lawyer. That is absolutely BS."
