Americans must keep pressure on Congress to stop lawmakers from ramming through an immigration reform bill that includes amnesty, says Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA.
"The bottom line for us is we really believe that the American people will win again this year, as they did last year, in stopping this big amnesty effort," Beck told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.
"But we believe it will happen only if the public just keeps the pressure on and makes it too hard for the majority of Republicans to tell [House Speaker John] Boehner to bring this stuff to the floor."
Beck says that Rep. Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin, insists amnesty is not on the table because the bill being considered doesn't include a special path to citizenship. NumbersUSA describes itself as "moderates, conservatives and liberals working for immigration numbers that serve America's finest."
"But most of us that oppose amnesties, what we oppose is not just citizenship, we oppose giving lifetime work permits and lifetime presence, which are the two things that people break the law to get," he said.
"They overstay their visas when they come to visit Disney World because they want to live here and they want to work here, and what Ryan has said over and over in the last few weeks is that they would get provisional work permits and legal residence immediately.
"This is before any new enforcement, and we know that once they get the work permits, once they get the legal presence, nobody's going to take that away from them again, so at the very least, it is a provisional amnesty. We believe that it will be a permanent amnesty.''
