Armstrong Williams: Romney's Move Spurred Carson to Endorse Trump

By    |   Thursday, 17 March 2016 07:11 PM EDT

Ben Carson likely wouldn't have endorsed Donald Trump for president if Mitt Romney had not called on Republicans to try to thwart Trump in the primaries, Carson's business manager Armstrong Williams told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"Dr. Carson saw that as someone who's trying to usurp the will of the people," Williams told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth.

Carson felt party bosses shouldn't try to stir up dissension and tell people how to vote, Williams said. "He felt that Mr. Trump earned the respect of the American people. He worked hard for it."

Though Carson disagreed with some of Trump's tactics, his front-runner status "was the will of the people," Williams said.

"He embraced Mr. Trump in an endorsement that unified the party because he felt there was something greater at stake in this year's election, and that is to make sure that we don't continue the policies of President Obama in the name of Hillary Rodham Clinton, and we don't continue the policies that are very destructive to America and our way of life," he said.

Trump will likely be the Republican nominee, Williams added.

"I know many people would like to say that Mr. Trump is bigoted and racist, but I don't believe that," he said. "I just think that Mr. Trump feels that he's the only one that belongs on that debate stage who can bring America what they're looking for, who can relate to their anger and their resentment against the establishment media."

Carson's personality is a contrast to Trump's and represents "temperament, discipline and respect," Williams said. "He criticized people, but there's certain lines that you don't cross when you're a presidential candidate."
