Noel Sheppard to Bette Midler: 'Keep Your Mouth Shut' About Politics

By    |   Friday, 18 October 2013 07:20 PM EDT

Bette Midler proved that entertainers should remain silent when it comes to politics when  she tweeted that Republicans are "as bad as the Taliban," says Noel Sheppard, associate editor of the media watchdog Newsbusters.

"It's kind of sad. In Midler's case, I used to be a big fan. I thought she was an extraordinary talent as a singer and she's been in some movies that are some of my favorite films," Sheppard told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Midler caused a stir when she went on Twitter Wednesday to comment on the government shutdown, and stated, "What a humiliating waste of time and energy this shutdown has been. The House GOP are as bad as the Taliban."

"What is it about these mostly Hollywoodans?" Sheppard asked.

"It seems to me that if I was in Hollywood … I would have an agent that would say, 'Please keep your mouth shut about this stuff. We're going to be able to get you a lot more jobs, we're going to be able to get you better jobs if you stay totally agnostic as it pertains to politics.''
