Rep. Huizenga to Newsmax: Birthright Citizenship a Worthy Debate

By    |   Wednesday, 22 January 2025 10:22 AM EST

Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich., told Newsmax on Wednesday that while he understands why the administration's goal to end birthright citizenship is concerning to many people, he emphasized that the issue is indeed worthy of debate.

Appearing on "Wake Up America," he talked about the fact that his state is 1 of 22 that has filed lawsuits challenging the executive order that President Donald Trump signed that seeks to roll back birthright citizenship, saying that it violates the 14th Amendment.

Huizenga said that "Michigan's attorney general ... is a hard left progressive and it is was not a surprise to me at all that she would go after the administration."

The congressman said, "I understand the concerns that people have on chain migration," as Michigan borders Canada "and there is a lot of crossover that's back and forth between our citizens."

However, Huizenga stressed "this notion that ... by hook or by crook, or by breaking the law, [people can] get to the United States so that they can have a child that is automatically a U.S. citizen is a worthy debate."

Huizenga also emphasized the significance of the Laken Riley Act being one of the first bills to hit Trump's desk as an important first move "to put everyone on notice that this border security problem ... that we have had over the past four years is coming to an end."

He said that this sends the message that "we are going to take this very seriously and we are going to prosecute these folks" who enter the country illegally and then commit violent crimes.

The congressman added that the president pushing immediately to implement so many of his campaign promises shows that "it is definitely a new day and Donald Trump is not playing around."

Huizenga stated emphatically that this is "why the American people love Donald Trump."
