Bishop Strickland to Newsmax: Trump's Focus on Faith Plans 'Logical'

By    |   Saturday, 08 February 2025 12:20 PM EST

President Donald Trump's plans to "bring back faith" in the U.S. are a "logical part of what this administration is doing," Bishop Joseph Strickland said on Newsmax Saturday.

"I've heard it described as a return to common sense," Strickland told Newsmax's "America Right Now." "Common sense isn't as common in the world as it should be, but we need to return to truth and to the light of revelation that God has offered us.

"As Christians, we know that Jesus Christ is truth incarnate. And so I am very pleased that President Trump is taking these steps and making it clear that anti-Christian bias, which is very real, is not appropriate in this great nation and needs to be dealt with."

He added that he is pleased that Trump is exposing corruption, "even in the Catholic Church and in Christianity and other denominations," as "we can never be fearful of the truth. Thankfully, President Trump isn't, and he's working hard to bring us back to that path of truth that we desperately need as a nation."

Trump said this week that he has several faith-based plans, including a White House faith office, a religious liberty commission, and a task force that would target anti-Christian bias in the federal government.

Strickland, the conservative priest whom Pope Francis removed as leader of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, in 2023 for his traditional teachings, added that he wants to see Trump flag "the threats to the sanctity of life."

"These things that President Trump is already dealing with — the gender mutilations and all of that — is a threat to the sanctity of life that is as foundational as it gets in the faith," he added.

"His office needs to be very clear that anything that threatens life from conception to natural death — certainly abortion is preeminent — that there are many consequences of not seeing life as sacred, that we're seeing played out in in the past years and in our society," said Strickland.

The bishop added that he finds it heartening that young people are speaking out.

"I was at the March for Life and the inauguration. And I saw a lot of strong, faithful youth at both of those events," he said. "That is great hope, because the youth are the ones who hold the future.

"We need to help them and be supportive of all these ways of bringing us back to the truth; so that young people, as they mature and develop their families, they can do so in a much stronger and a much happier world where God is known," Strickland added. "We human beings who come from God are never going to be truly happy without God, and that is essential."
